Bespoke rugs are created from the ground up. Every element, including scale, proportion, material, pattern, colour, and construction, is developed specifically for one space and one brief.

This process is suited to projects where the rug plays a central architectural role and supports the overall interior composition.

What Bespoke Involves

Bespoke rugs begin with a blank canvas.

The design is developed around:

  • Architectural layout
  • Furniture placement
  • Circulation paths
  • Ceiling heights and spatial volume
  • Material palettes and finishes
  • Intended level of use

Pattern direction, tonal balance, fibre composition, and pile structure are resolved together during development, rather than adjusted later.

Materials & Fibre Selection

Material is central to bespoke work.

Options may include:

  • Wool
  • 100% New Zealand wool
  • Merino wool
  • Mohair
  • Alpaca
  • Silk
  • Cashmere
  • Cotton and polished cotton

Wool and 100% New Zealand wool are typically specified for structural durability and long-term performance. Silk, alpaca, mohair, and cashmere may be introduced where softness, sheen, or surface variation is required.

Each fibre is selected according to how the rug will be used and the level of resilience needed.

Construction & Technique

Bespoke rugs are handcrafted using techniques best suited to the design intent:

  • Hand-knotted, for detailed pattern and long-term durability
  • Hand-tufted, for sculpted texture and design flexibility
  • Handloom, for tonal, structured surfaces
  • Flatweave, for lighter, reversible formats

The construction method influences longevity, surface definition, and underfoot feel. The technique is determined early in the design process.

Design Development

The bespoke process typically includes:

  • Project briefing and scope alignment
  • Concept sketches or digital visualisations
  • Material and colour direction
  • Technical specification and sizing
  • Sample strike-offs where required
  • Final approval before production

Large-scale or complex projects may require staged approvals.
